Edinburgh International Festival

From Friday 10 August to Sunday 2 September 2007, the Edinburgh International Festival will show up in Scotland, UK.

About this festival

The Edinburgh International Festival presents a rich programme of classical music, theatre, opera and dance in six major theatres and concert halls and a number of smaller venues, over a three-week period in late summer each year.

In addition to mounting the annual three week programme of events, the Festival has a year-round programme of education and outreach work, aimed at all ages from primary school pupils to adults.

The Festival began in 1947, with the aim of providing 'a platform for the flowering of the human spirit'. Right from the start it inspired people to put on shows of their own outwith the official Festival, and soon these grew into the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Since then half a dozen or so more festivals have grown up around it in August and early September, and collectively these are often know as 'the Edinburgh Festival'.

All artists and companies in the Festival appear at the invitation of the Festival Director. As the promoter of the event, the Festival’s budget covers all of the costs associated with delivering the programme including artists’ fees and travel, venue hire and promotion of the event. The Festival, which is a registered charity (a not-for-profit organisation), is solely responsible for raising income from ticket sales, fundraising and sponsorship, which along with public sector grants, cover these costs.

The key venues used are the Usher Hall (capacity 2,300), the Festival Theatre (1,800), The Edinburgh Playhouse (2,900), the King’s Theatre (1,300), the Royal Lyceum Theatre (650), The Queen’s Hall (920) and The Hub (420).

Background Information of Edinburgh Militarty Tattoo

For those who have no idea of Edinburgh Military Tattoo, we provide this information:

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo is a show by the military bands and teams in Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland, British Empire. When the british army went to the Low Countries, the word "tattoo" came out in the 17th centry. Each morning the drummers were sent out to summon the soldiers to return to their own stations. The first Military Tattoo began in 1950th. It has only eight items. Today every year over 22,000 people went to see the tattoo in Edinburgh. Nowadays the Edinburgh Military Tattoo has become a festival also known as "Edinburgh Military Festival". In Australia, the festival is broadcasted by ABC. The current Patron of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo is Princess Anne. It is not a surprise that every year the tickets were sold out months before the day of Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
