The production will feature a range of superb international performers with the centrepiece of the evening once again expected to be the spine-tingling sights and sounds of the world famous massed Pipes and Drums, one of the finest display anyone can witness anywhere in the world.

The 58th Edinburgh Military Tattoo has got under way with hundreds of musicians, dancers and riders performing to a sell-out audience.

The event, held on Edinburgh Castle's Esplanade, staged its first show on Friday night.

It paid tribute to the Queen and HRH Prince Philip's Diamond Wedding Anniversary and recognised the 25th anniversary of the Falklands War.

The event also celebrated 150 years of military music.

Organisers said that 500 musicians, 200 dancers, 35 motorcyclists and 30 horses performed at the show, which runs from 3 to 25 August.

More than 1,000 performers are expected at this summer's event

New chief executive and producer Major General Euan Loudon said organisers were "especially pleased" to include the diamond wedding and military music anniversaries in the year's show.

But he added: "We are not overlooking the fact that this year also sees the 25th anniversary of the Falklands War and we shall be duly acknowledging that in the programme."

Those taking part included the Band of The Moscow Military Conservatoire and the First Girls Senior High School Honour Guard and Drum Corps from the Taiwanese capital, Taipei.

Pipers from The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards and The Black Watch, among others, were also performing.

The Military Tattoo takes place annually on the Edinburgh castle esplanade. It is one of the many festivals that take place during the summer in Scotland's capital. Some 200,000 people, mostly tourists, visit the Tattoo every year whilst another 100 million are estimated to see it on television in some 30 countries. There's even a Tattoo webcam.

In 2006 the Tattoo is due to take place from 4th to 26th August. There will be a limited number of tickets available to buy at half price for the preview performance on August 3rd. If you're planning to stay in the city then I'd suggest booking your accomodation in plenty of time - Ediburgh gets very full during Festival season.

The Tattoo begun back in 1950, with the first stand erected the following year. Since then not a single performance has been cancelled, even though it has sometimes been rained on. In the last 50+ years the event has grown and evolved, however the foundations remain the same.

The key word for the Tattoo is "spectacle" as bands, display teams and other performers put on their show to the backdrop of Edinburgh castle. As you'd expect from a Scottish miliary show, pipes and drums feature heavily: for 2006 the organisers hope to have the largest gathering yet of pipes and drums, with contributions from around the world.

The show traditionally ends with fireworks and the singing of Auld Lang Syne.

The official Tattoo tartan was created in 1983 based around the colours navy blue (Navy), red (Army) and sky blue (RAF) along with black & white for Edinburgh. In 1998 a new Tattoo Jubilee tartan was created to celebrate the event's forthcoming 50th anniversary.

The Tatoo is run for charitable purposes and to date has gifted some millions. It has also earned an estimated several millions for the Scottish economy.

Due to the likelihood of strike action amongst Edinburgh City Council employees this Thursday, 23rd August, it is with regret that the scheduled lunchtime concert from the Band of the Moscow Military Conservatoire at the Ross Theatre in Edinburgh’s Princes Street Gardens will not now go ahead.

The show on Wednesday 22nd August will however proceed as planned at 12.30pm

One of the top attractions at this year's Edinburgh Tattoo (until August 25th) is set to make two special appearances next week in recognition of the popular support received from audiences who have witnessed their thrilling debut in the Scottish Capital.

Some of Russia's finest musicians are expected to steal the ear and ignite the imagination when Moscow's Band of the Military Conservatoire provide an enlivening display of music, movement and song at 12.30pm on Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd August at the Ross Theatre in Edinburgh's Princes Street Gardens.

The 60-strong band, resplendent in full ceremonial attire, will stage a free one-hour show in the gardens with a repertoire which includes 'Kalinka', 'Subboteia', and 'Farewell to the Slav'.

Said Tattoo Chief Executive & Producer, Major General Euan Loudon: "This fabulous Russian band has taken the Castle esplanade by storm, so this is a great opportunity to catch an extended complimentary performance from one of this year's star turns."

From Friday 10 August to Sunday 2 September 2007, the Edinburgh International Festival will show up in Scotland, UK.

About this festival

The Edinburgh International Festival presents a rich programme of classical music, theatre, opera and dance in six major theatres and concert halls and a number of smaller venues, over a three-week period in late summer each year.

In addition to mounting the annual three week programme of events, the Festival has a year-round programme of education and outreach work, aimed at all ages from primary school pupils to adults.

The Festival began in 1947, with the aim of providing 'a platform for the flowering of the human spirit'. Right from the start it inspired people to put on shows of their own outwith the official Festival, and soon these grew into the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Since then half a dozen or so more festivals have grown up around it in August and early September, and collectively these are often know as 'the Edinburgh Festival'.

All artists and companies in the Festival appear at the invitation of the Festival Director. As the promoter of the event, the Festival’s budget covers all of the costs associated with delivering the programme including artists’ fees and travel, venue hire and promotion of the event. The Festival, which is a registered charity (a not-for-profit organisation), is solely responsible for raising income from ticket sales, fundraising and sponsorship, which along with public sector grants, cover these costs.

The key venues used are the Usher Hall (capacity 2,300), the Festival Theatre (1,800), The Edinburgh Playhouse (2,900), the King’s Theatre (1,300), the Royal Lyceum Theatre (650), The Queen’s Hall (920) and The Hub (420).
